Top 10 Reasons to Square Dance

  • Square dancing can bring people together, and it encourages you to create a social life and make new friends that make you laugh as you learn from others.

  • Square dancing is based on walking in defined directions and distances. If you can walk, you can learn to square dance.

  • You will be so focused on the “task at hand” while dancing that your worries will be forgotten.

  • A typical square dancer can clock 9,000 to 10,000 steps during one dance. Fitbit wearers love it!

  • Square dancing burns 400 to 800 calories/hour. That’s like riding a bike!

  • Listening to the square dance calls sharpens the mind of the dancers.

  • Two hours of square dancing is equivalent to a five-mile walk!

  • Whether you are in Massachusetts, Montana or Mexico, you can square dance. Square dance calls are always in English.

  • People of all ages and walks of life square dance. Lifelong friendships are made through square dancing.

  • What is Modern Square Dancing?

Four couples form a square and execute steps dictated by a caller. The calls are entirely at the discretion of the caller. The calls provide a location to which a dancer moves. There are no prescribed dance steps for your feet. If you can walk, you can square dance!

What about the music? Is it all country-western?

Some callers are partial to country western music but most use a wide variety. You might hear songs from Elvis, Lady Gaga, Journey, the Bee-Gees or even classical music.

What about the clothes? Are boots and petticoats still worn?

You can wear them if you want and many do, on occasion. You can also wear prairie skirts, jeans, or polo shirts. Shorts are a rare exception and tight clothing is too restrictive.

Who are the dancers? Is there an age minimum?

Everyone is welcome at dances. If a child can listen and follow multiple directions (around age 10), he/she can dance. It’s a good activity for families, singles and couples alike!

How do you learn the basic calls?

Clubs offer lessons. The first dance is free then the club charges a nominal fee for each week of lessons. It is usually cheaper than going to the movies!
